An earthquake ends in minutes. The possibility that a building may fail can remain for weeks.
On 10 August, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake at a depth of 107 kilometres struck Colombia’s Pacific coast and was felt in Bogotá, Cali and other cities. Reuters described it as the strongest earthquake recorded in Colombia this century.
Available counts report at least 111 deaths, more than 1,600 damaged buildings and 61 collapses. The figures may change as inspections continue, but they already show that the problem extends beyond the epicentre.
Its depth reduced some of the destruction that a shallow earthquake of the same magnitude might have caused. It also spread the effects across a wide territory containing recent construction, informal housing, churches, earthen homes and historic centres.

A crack in a finish may be repairable. A diagonal fracture, an opened joint or a deformed roof may indicate that the load path has changed. Inspection is not about counting cracks, but understanding why they appeared and which part of the building no longer works as before.
Heritage adds another difficulty. Adobe, rammed earth, unreinforced masonry and heavy roofs do not respond like a modern frame. Repairing them with cement or elements that are too rigid can increase incompatibility during the next movement.
Closing a building as a precaution protects people, but it also displaces families, businesses, schools and services. A rapid classification must become a traceable diagnosis that supports a choice between shoring, repair, strengthening or demolition.
Colombia has seismic experience and resistant-building codes. The earthquake again exposes the gap between rules for new construction and millions of square metres built before them, altered without control or insufficiently maintained.
For architects and public authorities, the story does not end with documenting the most photogenic ruin. It means creating inventories, training inspectors, agreeing protocols and funding maintenance before an emergency.
The fact. the earthquake caused extensive damage and triggered assessments across several regions. Resilience is accumulated through years of inspection, maintenance and knowledge of the existing building stock.
What should be measured after an earthquake besides the number of damaged buildings?
How many were inspected, how long a reliable diagnosis took, which uses were displaced and which repairs will prevent the same damage from returning. The emergency counts collapses; resilience counts recovered capacity.
